Chart-topping K-pop group NewJeans has announced its departure from agency Ador, a subsidiary of South Korea’s entertainment giant Hybe, citing allegations of mistreatment, manipulation, and workplace harassment.
The five-member group, known for global hits like Super Shy and OMG, revealed the decision during a late-night press conference on Thursday. The announcement marks the latest twist in a series of controversies that have plagued NewJeans and their management.
Accusations of Workplace Harassment and Manipulation
Hanni, one of the group’s vocalists, accused Ador of workplace harassment and deliberate manipulation. In an emotional statement, she shared:
“This is not the type of work ethic we respect and not one we want to be a part of. Continuing to work under a company with no intention of protecting NewJeans would only do us harm.”
Hanni further alleged that the mistreatment extended beyond the group to their staff, citing incidents of “deliberate miscommunications and manipulation.”
Legal Battle and Contract Breaches
NewJeans filed a legal notice to Ador on November 13, demanding the resolution of contract breaches within 14 days. The group has requested an apology for alleged workplace bullying by a senior executive at Belift Lab, another Hybe subsidiary, and called for the reinstatement of Min Hee-jin, their former producer.
Min, credited with shaping NewJeans’ signature style, departed Ador in August amid allegations of attempting to split from Hybe to make NewJeans an independent act. She has denied these claims but accused Hybe of copying NewJeans’ music and aesthetic with another girl group, Illit.
Contract Disputes and Financial Implications
Although the group’s contract with Ador runs until 2029, the dispute has raised questions about early termination penalties. Industry estimates suggest the group could face fees as high as ₩300 billion (approximately £170 million), but member Haerin rejected this notion, stating:
“We never broke any rules. We did nothing but try our best—they are the ones at fault.”
Ador countered the claims, asserting that it had not violated the contract and urging the group to engage in open dialogue.
Impact on NewJeans’ Future
The group warned fans they might not retain the band’s name after their departure, a prospect that adds uncertainty to their future. Despite these challenges, NewJeans assured fans they would fulfill their contractual obligations.

Formed in 2022, NewJeans quickly rose to global fame under Hybe’s guidance. The group, consisting of members Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein, achieved significant milestones, including being the eighth best-selling act worldwide in 2023 and receiving a nomination for Best Group at the MTV Awards.
